misty slid the car into Virgil’s front yard of dirt and sand, honking all the way. She jerked to a stop, throwing Luke’s head to her side, causing him to retch again. Fortunately, he had nothing left to retch. It was all over his shirt and cargo pants.

A cloud of dust enveloped them as she honked again — louder, longer.

Angrily, she threw open her door and raced around to his side. Only then did she notice there were no other cars. Maybe no one was home.

But as she yanked open his door, she caught movement on the front porch.

“What’s going on?” Fiona’s voice shouted. “Who is it? Who’s out there?”

“It’s Luke!” Misty yelled. “There’s something wrong with him!”

“Luke?”

Misty reached across to unlatch his safety belt. He gave a groan — part gasp, part whimper.

“It’s okay,” she said, fighting the latch, “you’re going to be okay.”

“What is it? What happened?” The old woman shuffled quickly toward them.

“Luke’s sick!” Finally the latch released. “Come on, cowboy.” She tried pulling him out, but he was lead.

He turned to her. Mouth and chin wet. Eyes wild, darting.

“It’s okay, it’s okay.”

“Luke?” Fiona was behind her now.

Misty slipped her shoulder under his arm and pulled.

“Come on now. Come on.”

He tried to help but with little success.

“What happened?” the woman demanded.

“Datura.”

“What?”

“He took some datura. I told him it was stupid, but he wouldn’t listen.”

She gave up on his arm and focused on his legs. She lifted one up and pulled it over, then the other.

“How long ago? How much?”

With both of his feet on the ground she yelled, “Take my arm! Take it!”

He obeyed and she pulled. It was a clumsy maneuver causing her to slam his head into the roof.

“Sorry.”

She finally dragged him out and leaned him against the car, pausing to catch her breath.

“How much?” Fiona repeated.

“I don’t know. I heard something about six ounces.”

She had no idea what the typical dose was but the woman’s gasp —

“Dear Jesus . . .”

— told her it was probably enough.

“Luke?” Fiona moved within inches of his face. “Son, can you hear me?”

At first nothing registered.

“Luke!”

Startled, his eyes focused. He began moving his lips.

Two words escaped. “Help . . . me . . .”

“We will, son, we will.” Fiona turned to Misty. “Let’s get him into the house.”

She nodded and moved to one side as Fiona moved to the other.

“Can you walk?” Fiona asked. “Luke, can you walk?”

He gave no answer.

“Luke?” Misty shouted.

He rolled his head to her.

“We’re going to get you to the house. But you gotta help. Okay?”

He nodded and looked ahead, squinting. That’s when he caught sight of the mountain. And that’s when he went crazy.

His body stiffened. His eyes widened. “No!”

“What is it?” Fiona asked. “What’s wrong?”

“No!”

He wrenched free from them and stumbled away. Struggling to keep his balance, he took three steps, four. Then stopped and looked back at the peak.

“No!” He snapped back his head, flinching. “Stay away!”

“Luke!”

He staggered backward, raising his hands. “No! No!” He swung his arms, clawing at the air, fighting an invisible attack.
